We have all heard about how when a woman marries all her possession become her husband's, well in the 17th century this was true and that’s where our story begins. In the beginning there was a lady called Mrs Shaw she was bequeathed the Isle of Barrow. We can only as yet presume that she bequeathed the land to her daughter.
Her daughter married Thomas Yates Parker. He then rented it to William Postlethwaite who farmered the land. Thomas build a mansion this was later called Michealson mansion and had a farm and stables, as yet we don’t now a lot about Thomas and his wife. but we will research and find out all we can about them.
The mansion was pulled down in 1941 to house a howitzer gun station during the 2nd world war. But there must be more to the connction than that and you can be sure that I will find it out.On the land he kept he farmed the land and stabled his horses to this day you can find a foundation stone on St Patricks church was one of the original bricks from the farm.
We will be going as far back as possible that way we can get as mush information as possible. As you will have read on the main page we have done quite a bit of research. While we where doing this research looking through old maps we discovered that it was called isle of Barrow Hawcoat The meaning of Hawcoat being a shelter for sheep.
